G'day stranger!

Rose here – sliding into your inbox this week to tell you all about our podcast. Whether you are new or a regular listener, I’m here to spill some behind the scenes secrets.

Can you believe we’re half way through season two of the Particle Podcast? We had been developing the podcast since late last year, and recording since February.

When we launched in March, we had 8 episodes ready to go. By the end of season one we were recording episodes remotely, and now we are slowly moving back to interviews IRL in season two, recording in the delightful acoustic environment of the Scitech Planetarium.

It’s been so exciting to see the podcast go from an idea to a tangible product I can force all my family and friends to listen to. Hearing scientists talk candidly about their work and careers is the ultimate peek behind the curtain. Plus I’m never short of fun facts for when the conversation lulls at the pub.

(I’ve also heard it’s good to binge on road trips, or listen to at work when Friday afternoon gets a little bland.)

It was a challenge, but I've curated some of my favourite episodes below.

The rest can be found on your podcast app of choice – just search for Particle WA or hit one of these shiny buttons.

And if you’ve never listened before, why not give it a go?

Ben has a Fringe show all about science, and his enthusiasm for science and talking about it is nothing short of infectious. Naturally, I thought he would be a perfect fit for the first episode of the pod.

I was rather intimidated knowing we were about to talk about physics, so asking how he would explain his research to a small child was actually for my benefit. Ben blew me away with how clearly he could explain something that’s literally impossible to see.

Sometimes when we ask the podcast guests weird questions, I get a little nervous to see how they will respond. Not everyone is ready to be asked, “how would you hide a dead body“?

But Jordan was so ready to be asked any weird or spicy questions, and t made the interview so much fun to be a part of. Particle team member Zaya sat in on this recording – and she enjoyed it so much that I had to edit out some giggles from her side of the room.

I am such a fan of Rae Johnston. She’s a STEM and gaming journalist, and has worked in every broadcasting platform you can imagine. When she agreed to be on the pod, I was over the moon. Granted, I was pretty nervous, but so excited. And yes, she is as lovely as she comes across on the episode.

Just before the episode started recorded, we bonded over wearing ugg boots whilst on interviews. #justWFHthings #BFFs

As a plant nerd, I adore WA’s natural environment. We’ve got so many amazing plant and animal species, stuff that you couldn’t make up! I really enjoyed chatting to Heather about her career, because she really has followed her passions every step of the way. Her story telling is so visual.

Even having had only one conversation with her, I can totally see how she ended up writing fiction books. I stand by this episode being a good one to listen to whilst on a hike or sitting in a park. Grab some outside time and go hug a tree.

Now that you're caught up ...

This week I got to ask our guest all my deep sea questions (it’s one of my obsessions). I was joined by Dr Nerida Wilson, who’s a molecular marine biologist. She absolutely loves sea slugs and honestly I do too after this chat. They are SO CUTE! And some even look like David Bowie (google it).

Also, she was the part of the team that found the world’s longest organism a few months back, so I got the scoop on that.

So, are you a sea slug, or a sea snail?
