Digging through data

As the Particle team got ready to work from home this week, one of the things we found ourselves thinking about was our data. What do we need to download before we go? Who needs access to what? And how do we keep track of it all?

So, this week’s stories are all about data: collecting it, combing through it, and checking it’s in the hands of the right people.

Data is at the heart of modern science. Technology has made it not just easier to gather, and easier to process, but easier to hang on to as well. That’s led to some pretty incredible discoveries, whether they’re deep in space, or deep below the water.

Keeping an ear on the Swan River dolphins

Every dolphin has a ‘signature whistle’ which helps their pod keep track of them. What if we could tune in too?

How big data is transforming astronomy

Space is big. Really big. There’s more data out there than humans can ever look at – so what’s an astronomer to do?

Of course, data’s not all sunshine and rainbows. It can be dark, messy, and incredibly valuable – they don’t call it the new oil for nothing.

So today, we’re also taking a closer look at a question we’ve all wondered at some point: how much data do our phones collect on us?

If that’s got you fired up to fix your privacy, Curtin have just the course for you. If that all seems like a bit much, why not head outside and collect some data instead?

(And don’t worry, neither of them break those new social distancing rules.)

The Particle Podcast is where we’re asking real scientists the big questions. Stuff like “If carnivorous plants eat, does that mean they poo too?”

You'll have to listen to find out.

And make sure you’re subscribed on your podcast platform of choice so you don’t miss out – we’re releasing a new episode every week.

Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you soon!
